Set 200-1 Family

Set 200-1 Family

After releasing numerous model-scaled buildings and vehicles, LEGO started thinking of model people, a family even.

In the early 1970s a new theme came out: Building Set with People. Brick built people, with posable arms, faces, hair or wearing a hat.

This particular family were released in 1974. And the set includes a mum, a dad, a teenage daughter, a young son and a grandmother, who is sitting down. Nowadays we refer to these vintage brick built people as maxifigs.

Striking features

What I like most about maxifigs, is the reversible hair. For example the mother and daughter have the same hairpiece, but turn them around and they have a different look. Like they have just have been to the hairdresser.

Also new at this stage of LEGO part development is the 2×2 brick, that serves as a torso. With a hole to fit and click the head and rotatable hinges on either side of the brick. More hinge parts could be attached to create short (child) or long (adult) arms. These single or double hinged bricks lasted long through the (classic) space era.

The little yellow hands with an open stud can click on any other stud, or hold a bar. LEGO were really onto something here 😉

Saving the set

We saved this set from a LEGO haul. We put it back together with the time-appropriate patent pending parts. Since we found two instruction books, we have added one set to our private collection.

And we are eager to complete the other set and pass it on to a vintage LEGO fan. If you are interested: keep an eye on our store on Bricklink or Brick Owl.
